30 years of Atomik

I guess the best person to write this page is me.

If you are new to Atomik Disco then I would

like to introduce myself to you!

My name is Chris Doherty and it’s all my fault!

That emotive name of the 70’s is still here.

Surviving through the nuclear arms race of the

super powers in the70’s & early 80’s and the

UK’s very own Greenham Common.

I can tell you I took some stick back in those days over the name Atomik. Can you imagine having to defend your company’s name before anybody had seen or heard your discos? But now it’s different, it’s cool to be called Atomik – just look at the Internet, with all sorts of variations on how to spell it! To a lot of people over the years we have always been known as Atomik Disco so for us it was the logical choice to register the name atomikdisco.com. I hope you feel as comfortable with the name as we do.

Although I had done a bit of Djing it wasn’t until January 1977 that I bought my first disco. It was a secondhand system that belonged to a Mike Black. As the story was told to me, he worked for Edinburgh’s MBE amplification/Northern light down at the old mill in Colinton and had all this disco equipment custom made at his work. I was told the gear had to be seen and he was only selling it to make space in his flat! I was suitably impressed and as it came with records I stumped up the £150 asking price with the financial help of my older brother Steve. The original idea was to change the name, but because of the nifty illuminated signage built in to the front of the deck console, I decided to keep the original name and save my money for other things. After all it was a powerful name anyway! A few weeks later I was doing my very first gigs with Atomik. It all started for me at the Mount Royal Hotel, Princes Street, Edinburgh on February 4, 1977. It was a 10pm start and on until 6am, it was the times of the Rugby International all night discos. The gigs were passed on to me with the sale of the equipment. After all I was now Mr ATOMIK - who else should do them! They happened twice a year and lasted several years until the hotel had enough - they could be a bit wild!

I am still grateful to Matt Campbell of the Mount Royal Hotel for having such faith in a young 17 year old! In 2004 he was still at the hotel.

I am now 30 years with Atomik, still in charge and still enjoying it! There have been many changes over those 30 years, in music and technology. I would like to think that we have contributed to those changes too, through our manufacturing side and our mixing DJ’s who have gone on to make records.

The past 30 years have been a lot of fun working in some of the classiest and most interesting places in Scotland and Northern England.

In the past 30 years I’ve taken Atomik into new directions - as the disco business grew and evolved we grew and evolved too, into sales, service, installation and manufacture. But never forgetting our beginnings. However after 30 years in the business (a long time after our coming of age) the mobile disco side of our business still remains the steadfast core of our business today. It has remained as popular as ever and increased beyond comparison. As we now look to an even more colourful and sound future you too can become part of that with us by choosing Atomik for your entertainment and join our long list of satisfied customers.

We do many children's parties every year and have done thousands since 1977!

For children's parties we supply interactive DJ's who will take music requests and play a good mixture of music suitable for the

age group present.

The DJ will also organise and execute games if required. Our DJ's are very likeable and get on well with children of all ages and the kids can relate to them.

Normally parents or adults can sit back and relax and the DJ will do it all - the only thing we ask is that you supply the prizes!

I can empathise having been a successful publican and licensee myself. Some 10 years ago I operated and personally managed a highly successful venue which included a bar, a 44 cover restaurant and a late night live entertainment/disco bar. So I have first hand knowledge and experience of the workings within the licensed trade.”

Atomik have been supplying its services to the licensed trade from the very first day of our existence. Now 30 years on we are still heavily involved with the trade - supplying our services direct to them. From small hotels to large internationally known names. From small privately owned or managed houses to large pub chains!

The pub trade has changed quite considerably for us over the last 10 years with almost all of our mid-week pub discos gone in preference to Sky Sports and more recently Setanta. But not everybody is a die hard sports fan!

We constantly asses our business, making sure that we maintain our high standards in customer satisfaction. And in this very accessible multi-media age that we live in we have to remain more special at what we do to compete.

In these highly competitive times, for us it’s not just about playing records or CD’s (it never has been) it’s about being special - different, standing out and above our competition - which we do! For us it’s more like the DJ being a showman - an entertainer but at a realistic price!

That’s why we have a dedicated price list for the licensed trade. We offer a discount scheme - the more you use us the more you save. This is available on both discos and karaoke. You can mix and match to get your discounts. You can even save more if we can utilise existing things like your tvs or sound system - we are very flexible! We even offer installation packages free - obviously that depends on volume!

Our philosophy is quite simple.

For pubs - we recommend a talking DJ. Our DJ’s can relate to the customers. He or she will talk over the mic using their experience to create a warm and friendly atmosphere, with the DJ playing to a music policy that works for everybody - before you know it your customers multiply! This is a tried and tested formula that works.

If you just want a disco then you might as well put the juke box on free play all night and let the punters choose!

Important announcement!

Atomik has changed - change can be a good thing, and for us it was!

In 2005 we changed the way we use DJs. We now recommend DJs to you for your event - this gives us access to a huge market of Freelance DJs, from pub DJs to radio personalities! So now we can offer you our equipment at a great price and recommend a DJ to match! All Atomik’s favourites are still there on ‘our’ list plus more.

So how does it work.

We now supply the equipment (as before) and arrange for you a suitable DJ from ‘our’ list of recommended DJs. (We do not charge you for arranging the DJ or liasing with them on your behalf - this service is complementary as long as you take our equipment for your event.) On our booking form we will now show the DJ as a separate entity - they always were a separate entity, but now by law we have to clarify this. We will now show how much it costs for us and what you will pay the DJ. To avoid any confusion there is a total at the bottom of the booking form as before - the total amount you have to pay. As previously this amount is to be paid at the beginning of your event (hire).

So what does it all mean

To the private individual, it means you save money as we keep our operating costs down and Gordon Brown loses out!

Standard Size Mobile Disco System

Suitable for average sized venues catering for up to 150 people.

Our Standard Size Mobile Disco Show is by far the most popular size of all the systems that we supply. We consider it to be the perfect balance of light and sound. It’s normally more than adequate for the most popular of venues around! It consists of a DJ suitable for the occasion with CDs/records etc., 500watt rms. sound system, light show consisting of 1 front light box – 1metre square with 12 reflector spot lamps and 9 diffused. Two motorised high definition multi-coloured/patterned moonflower effects i.e. Kaleidoscope of colour projected onto dance floor, ceiling or walls.

When you hire ATOMIK for karaoke - your favourite song is GUARANTEED NOT TO JUMP when you sing-along with it! We use the latest professional digital karaoke players with multi-format HD technology for error free playback. And unlike many other karaoke companies, we do NOT use laptops - we leave it to them to resemble mobile offices!!
